Why stones and rocks in rivers or near the sea are usually smooth?

it is caused by constant mechanical weathering. fast flowing water carries sediment and can move pieces of rock, which bump and break pieces off one another. Gritty sediment acts like sandpaper as it washes over the rocks. it wears away the surface, making it smooth-just like when you file your nails.
